Must-try alsatian advent specialties

The market stalls offer local products from Obernai, alsatian Christmas specialties, unique handmade crafts, and, of course, Obernai’s famous white mulled wine, brewed according to a traditional recipe in a giant cauldron by Obernai’s winemakers. Among the market’s other specialties, don’t miss the alsatian wines and beers, spiced hot apple juice, Riesling soup, foie gras and local charcuterie, tarte flambée, and sausage cooked in a still. Also don’t miss the bredele (traditional small Christmas shortbread cookies), artisanal gingerbread from Gertwiller (aka Gingerbread Capital and a neighbor city of Obernai), mannele, and Baerewecke (rich fruit breads). And to capture the spirit of a Christmas don’t forget to bring back a few kelsch fabric ornaments or blown-glass Christmas balls to decorate your tree.

Highlights and locations of the Obernai Christmas Market

Set against the enchanting backdrop of its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and iconic belfry, Obernai celebrates Christmas with elegance and culinary delights. The Obernai Christmas Market takes place every year from late November through late December. About 40 chalets are set up at 5 locations: on the Place du Marché, at the foot of the belfry (in front of the tourist office), the Place de l’Etoile, the Place Neher, and the Cour Athic. The Obernai Christmas Market is one of the few to remain open after Christmas, continuing through December 31, so you can still enjoy the festive atmosphere and lights, with fewer crowds. Located on the Alsace Wine Route, it’s very accessible : just a 30-minute ride on the TER train from Strasbourg and a 5-minute walk from the train station. It’s the perfect day trip.
